Big Theatre Week Highlights

This half term, our MPYTers embarked on an exciting adventure with the talented theatre maker, Bethan Dear, of Jackdaw Theatre. Current and new members alike threw themselves into the action, guided by volunteer from our ‘Twenties’ group. A week to remember which pushed us all to the limits of our creativity, time management and teamwork… all inspired by a question from our brainstorm: "Who killed Charlie Kirk?" (Charlie Kirk is an especially nasty far-right political media personality)

The concept might have seemed simple at first—a classic murder mystery—but it quickly took a shift into the absurd: a political gameshow that satirized Charlie Kirk's own TV show. Our MPYTers transformed into quirky contestants in a ridiculous, over-the-top show designed to "kill" Charlie Kirk's media persona. Hilarious games (such as political bingo) mocked the conventions of political discourse and TV spectacle, blending humour with chaos at every turn – with a huge twist at the end: a real murder!

The biggest challenge this week was the timeframe: to devise, script, rehearse and perform an entire play in just six days. But our MPYTers work well under pressure, and their unwavering enthusiasm under Bethan’s careful direction

By the end of the week, a collection of scribbled mind maps had evolved into the final piece: a scratch show that was funny, strange, and political. Every single actor brought their own unique talents to the table, making it a truly collaborative journey.

One of the highlights of the production was the amazing response we had from our audience who fully embraced the over-the-top directions given by our talented “Sign Holder”. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and the only complaint was that they clapped so much they ended up with sore hands!
