Big MPYT

Restarting 14th January 2025.

This is the core youth theatre group; the Tuesday evening workshop that’s been running since 1987.

This is a group for 14-24yr olds, running from 7.15 - 8.45pm during term times. It’s run by our Artistic Director Ralph, Co-ordinator Melody, and a variety of wonderful workshop leaders. A typical session – outside of production rehearsals – will involve theatre games and exercises, devising challenges; trust & focus games; and other stuff like physical theatre; mask-work; design; puppetry; circus; singing; stage-combat… ooh, we could go on, but you’ll have to come and see for yourself.

MPYT is a space where imagination comes to life. It’s where friendships are born, and unique individuals come together to create something magical.

You will have a chance to find your voice—learn what you think, who you are, and where you want to belong in the world. It’s a place to ask life’s big questions and figure out the answers together. It’s a place to feel joy, and have fun.

MPYT is safe space to be bold, to take risks, push at the edges and discover new sides of yourself.

MPYT is always led by professional theatre makers. You can find out who will be leading upcoming sessions on our What's On page.

MPYT+

Starting 26th January 2025.

This group is currently in the making, but it comes from the knowledge that while lots of our members head off to new places and the next stage of their journeys, there are lots who choose to stay in Powys. And what happens then?

So we’re making a plan, a bit of a continuation strategy for local young people aged 19-29 and their engagement and connection with theatre and all the amazing opportunities it can offer in building a life.

To get the ball rolling we are going to meet on the last Sunday of the month from 3:30-5:30pm to have some fun, play some games, do some impro and maybe read some cracking new plays.

We are also developing some professional development opportunities for this age group and there are chances to get involved in emerging leader roles with the company and actors, workshop leaders and production arts.

This summer, six young people went to Greenman festival and and began dreaming ideas for something to make at the festival next year... Watch this space, and if you’re in that age bracket and fancy being a part of this new part of the MPYT family - get in touch at hello@mpyt.co.uk

GetOffTheStage!

Let’s face it, some of us were born to be on stage, and some of us weren’t.  But there’s so much about theatre that happens off stage - and we are here for it. MPYT isn’t just about performance, it's about the whole gamut of skills and interests that make up theatre - and the massive industry that chugs away backstage that so many people aren’t aware of.

This group is all about offering our young members a taste of Production Arts - in all its glorious forms: design; stage management; lighting; sound; props, costume; graphic art; scenic art and a zillion others.  Creative Tech and Production Arts is a booming sector, and Wales is a leader - live theatre is recognised as real fertile ground to forge skills and future careers.  This programme is about sparking the possibilities open to our members who’ve decided the thespian life isn’t for them.

Sounds like your cup of tea?  Come and have a chat and find out more at hello@mpyt.co.uk

CERYS: “…it opened my eyes to the more technical side of the theatre…”

Hey! My name’s Cerys, I’m 19, I come from Mid Wales and am currently in my second year of studying Stage Management and Technical Theatre at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama which I am thoroughly enjoying. However, this was not the path I had seen myself taking. I was originally heading down a medical path, however felt I would much prefer a more creative profession but was lost to what exactly. I came to MPYT originally to join the acting side; however, it opened my eyes to the more technical side of the theatre and gave me the opportunity to help kick start my passion and future career as a Stage Manager. I believe there is a real lack of recognition and appreciation for the production side of the theatre, film, and the TV industry. Youth Theatres like MPYT play a crucial role in enlightening and educating people from a young age and act as a gateway into the industry.

FELICITY: “didn’t know that Stage Management existed, let alone…have a career in it!”

I’m Felicity, I’m 20 years old and I’m from Llandrindod Wells, Mid Wales. Currently I’m in my second year of studying Stage Management and Technical Theatre at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I joined MPYT when I was 13, not really knowing anything about theatre; I didn’t know that Stage Management existed, let alone that you could have a career in it! I had a go at acting and decided that it wasn’t really my thing. I then asked to help out with prop making and this is where I fell in love in with being backstage. MPYT introduced me to many areas of Stage Management and Technical Theatre. It gave me an all-round understanding of the disciplines of lighting, sound, AV and working as an ASM and DSM in a fun environment. This helped me gather paperwork, images and items that I could put into a mini portfolio when applying to drama schools. I am very much enjoying studying Stage Management and Technical theatre and hope to have a career in either Stage Management or scenic construction. I’m very grateful for all MPYT has done for me.

RORY: “…getting interested in tech and receiving mentoring from professionals”

Hi, My name is Rory, I’m 20 years old and in my third year on the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts production and technical course. I have also been working freelance at Footprint Scenery which has been a huge pleasure and I’ve been able to work on some pretty awesome projects. I’m now living in London and making a career I’m proud of, and I’m able to do work that I find exciting and fulfilling. Mid Powys Youth Theatre marks the start of that journey for me, from joining as an actor and meeting others I could relate to, to getting interested in tech and receiving mentoring from professionals. As we did productions I learnt more and was introduced to Beth Treen a professional DSM and ex MPYTer, she pointed me towards going to a Drama School and let me shadow her in the Wycombe Swan theatre. I was inspired and applied to several Uni’s like RADA and Bristol Old Vic and got offers from almost all of them thanks to the references and support from those within MPYT. So yeah, a massive thank you to those who have and continue to support them and I’m excited to someday meet a new Techie in the industry who passed through MPYT on their journey.
